Semen results can vary, and the useful next step is a structured evaluation that confirms the finding, looks for hormone, anatomy, medication, exposure, and health clues, and connects the male workup to the couple's timeline.

What a low sperm count does and does not tell you

Sperm concentration describes how many sperm are measured in a volume of semen. It is only one part of a semen analysis. Total sperm number, movement, shape, semen volume, and the pattern across multiple findings can matter more than an isolated number.

A result below a laboratory reference range does not by itself identify the cause, determine whether conception can occur, or select a treatment. Reference limits describe populations; they are not a pass-fail fertility guarantee.
