Male Infertility Tests: What a Complete Evaluation Can Include
There is no single male infertility test that answers every question. Semen analysis is the starting anchor, but a complete evaluation may also use history, examination, hormone testing, genetics, imaging, or specialized tests when the result would change the couple's plan.
Fertility testing is usually not emergency care, but sudden severe testicular pain, rapid swelling, fever, trauma, or a new hard lump needs prompt assessment.

Start with the question the couple needs answered
Testing should be tied to a decision: confirm a semen abnormality, look for a treatable contributor, plan sperm retrieval, assess fertility after a procedure, or coordinate with IUI, IVF, or ICSI.
Partner age, ovarian reserve, time trying, prior pregnancy history, and family-size goals help determine whether evaluation and fertility treatment should proceed in parallel.
History and examination are clinical tests too
A reproductive history can identify prior pregnancies, childhood testicular conditions, infections, surgery, vasectomy, cancer therapy, erection or ejaculation concerns, medicines, testosterone exposure, heat, and occupational risks.
A focused examination can assess testicular size, the vas deferens, varicocele, scars, and other clues. Imaging does not automatically replace a skilled examination.
Semen analysis is the laboratory anchor
A semen analysis evaluates volume, concentration, total number, motility, morphology, and other observations under standardized laboratory methods. Results are interpreted as a pattern, not as independent pass-fail scores.
If the sample is incomplete or the result is abnormal, repeat testing may be requested. The laboratory's collection and transport instructions should control preparation.

A test may become reasonable later when repeated results, recurrent pregnancy loss, failed assisted reproduction, severe abnormalities, or a surgical decision creates a specific question.
